The GROW model developed by Sir John Whitmore is a simple yet powerful framework for structuring coaching sessions. It stands for:

  • Goals that you want to achieve
  • Reality that you need to assess and understand to make an informed decision

  • Will (or way forward) to make the plan pan out in reality.

I often use this model to guide my coaching sessions. It’s a great resource for coaches, managers, and anyone in a mentoring role. It provides a clear roadmap for progress and helps clients achieve their objectives efficiently.

How Coaches Use GROW Coaching Model

Leading experts in the field agree that the first way to use GROW Coaching model is to tell your clients or employees to think of it as being similar to planning a trip. 

Setting the Goal

To begin with, they will need to determine where they want to go (i.e., the goal). Start by goal setting. Ask them what their primary objective is and why it matters to them. Encourage them to visualize success: how will it change their life, and what will it feel like when they achieve it? Understanding the importance and impact of the goal will help in setting a clear and motivating target.

Assessing Reality

Then they need to see where they are currently (i.e., in reality). Have them assess their current situation, including any steps they’ve already taken towards their goal and the results of those efforts. Discuss the resources they currently have and the challenges or obstacles they face. This step is crucial for understanding the starting point and any immediate barriers that need to be addressed.

Exploring Options

Next, they should investigate numerous routes (or options) to their destination and consider the obstacles in the way. Ask them to brainstorm different paths they could take to achieve their goal. Discuss the possible pros and cons of each option and identify potential obstacles and ways to overcome them. Encourage them to think creatively and consider all available resources and support systems.

Establishing Commitment

In the final step — establishing the will — they will basically solidify whether they’re committed to making the journey and are prepared to deal with the obstacles they could encounter along the way. Gauge their commitment by asking how dedicated they are to achieving this goal on a scale of 1 to 10. Help them plan strategies to stay motivated and seek the support they need to ensure success.

Your job as a coach will be to guide and mentor your clients throughout this process.

6 Tips To Practice GROW Coaching Model

Here are 6 tips I suggest to make use of to achieve the full potential of the GROW coaching model.

  • Always be present and plan your sessions in advance.
  • Analyze and understand your client’s pitfalls and self-limiting beliefs. Many times, you will have to point them out to your client subtly.
  • Make note of your clients’ strengths, and remind them when they tend to get overly critical.
  • It will help in establishing a topic for the goals that you want to tackle with your client, so that you don’t have completely unrelated goals.
  • The model doesn’t have to be linear. Feel free to keep revisiting the first and second phases as and when you deem fit, to solidify the action plans and execution phases.
  • The job of an effective coach is to ask the right questions and guide the client in the right direction. So do not get too caught up in trying to find solutions for your clients; instead, give them opportunities to find the solutions themselves.

The GROW coaching model is not a ‘one solution fits all’ model. I cannot stress this enough — coaches should look at this model as complementary to other methods they already employ. I have covered other coaching models as well. 

You cannot treat each client in the same way, and spend the same amount of time on each phase with every client. 

Sometimes, a client might need more time in the Goal-setting phase, but might breeze through the Options phase. 

Other times, a client might take less than half a session to determine the goal but might take a very long time in the Options or Reality phase. So you, as a coach, have to mold your sessions and training according to each client.
