Alyssa Johnson
Alyssa Johnson is a formerly practicing attorney who now works with lawyers and legal organizations on topics related to lawyer well-being. What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
I’ve spent many years healing childhood trauma and in the process, I’ve learned so much about trauma and how it impacts our development. I incorporate trauma-informed tools into my coaching in order to better serve lawyers. I’ve also worked with productivity teachers who have studied the neuroscience of our brains and our hormones, and I utilize that information in the materials I teach around productivity and stress management. Finally, I’ve spent a number of years healing my race-based trauma and am able to hold space for White people to acknowledge and heal their internalized racism in order to take anti-racist actions.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
The support of my friends and family, as well as addressing my childhood and race-based trauma, have been crucial to my success as a coach. When I began the journey of healing childhood trauma, the first few years were excruciatingly painful. Were it not for my friends and family who supported me, the outcome of my life would have been very different.
Addressing and healing trauma have also been crucial to my success as the healing has liberated me from the many lies I believed about myself due to childhood trauma, as well as the many lies I was taught under White supremacy.
Jo-Anne Stark
Jo-Anne has been a lawyer since 1993 and a strong advocate for access to justice, having worked as a legal coach in the Province of Saskatchewan. As a member of both the British Columbia and Saskatchewan Bar, Jo-Anne has been invited to make numerous presentations on the topic of legal coaching and the use of technology to create efficiencies in the delivery of legal services,
for both lawyers and law students. Having spent many years as an arbitrator hearing thousands of cases, she is keenly aware of the challenges faced by self-represented litigants who are unable to afford lawyers and who do not qualify for legal aid services. Her development of a unique and affordable business model has transformed the way legal services can be provided virtually to self-represented clients.
Anne Vespry
I was called to the Bar in 2003, and worked for several years as the managing partner in a two-person, general practice firm. Most of the issues I handled involved Wills and Estates or Family law. I currently teach as well as practicing, and I consider myself more of a solicitor than a barrister as it has been several years since last a matter required me to attend at Court.
Joel Miller
Joel Miller is our founder and long-time family law lawyer who stepped out of traditional practice to create The Family Law Coach.
