THE TOP BOOK cOACHES
A book coach is a person who helps you structure and writes your book. One might be having problems finishing their book or getting it in great shape. Your book coach is a person who is detached from your book. He can look at the book with a fresh pair of eyes and help you write something readable and appealing to the audience.

A book coach is a mentor who will hold your hand and guide you through the book writing process. A book coach will also help you analyze your book and make corrections where necessary. They work as a freelance editor who specializes in helping people write, publish, and promote their books. They can help you with your book from the initial draft all the way through to the launch, which is the point at which you start to sell your book.
Each book coaches, each with their extraordinary style trying to help the clients on enhancing their content on the book, and asked them what’s remarkable about their coaching and what has endorsed their massive success.
Do you think you or a coach that you know deserves to be featured as a top book coach? If yes, then fill out this form and we will consider your application and get in touch with you for the next steps.
Abigail K. Perry
Abigail K. Perry is a book coach and certified developmental editor who specializes in Upmarket/Book Club Fiction, Women’s Fiction, and Curio Fiction as well as the query process. She is also the host of the podcast Lit Match and worked as an editorial intern and the Agency Relations Assistant at a literary agency for a couple of years.

She has a B.S. in TV, Radio, and Film from Syracuse University (Newhouse) and a Masters in Secondary Education.
What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
I support fiction writers in a compassionate and organized environment that challenges them and supports discovery of their story’s developmental needs and voice and style (there’s tough love—I am honest about what I don’t see working but also provide direction with examples on what to do instead and how to do that). I value differentiated learning; while I have a preferred approach to planning a book and personal stylistic taste, I do my best to balance structure with spontaneity. I have hands-on experience working at a literary agency and guide writers interested in traditional publishing with literary agent research and their pitch packages.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
Like all professions, I respect and deeply value my mentors and writing communities. I am lucky to have a combination of teaching experiences (I worked as a creative writing and film teacher for a handful of years in a high school) as well as literary agents and book coaches and experts who are leaders in the publishing and coaching industries. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t become a contributing writer for Gabriela Pereira’s DIY MFA or interned at P.S. Literary; I never stopped learning, especially thanks to Carly Watters. As a book coach, I am incredibly grateful for my good friend and book coach Savannah Gilbo (we first connected as certified Story Grid editors—my certification in Story Grid initially gave me the confidence to pursue freelance work) and the Author Accelerator program created by book coach Jennie Nash. My podcast, Lit Match, was a game changer for me and I absolutely love interviewing my guests and producing it. And of course, my clients—from the first ones who took a risk hiring me when I was new to all the new clients who take me on today—books don’t exist without writers, and nor do any publishing professionals!

What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
I help businesses leaders write and publish exceptional business and self-development books, and I champion the value of both reading and writing in business more broadly. I believe that writing is one of the most important tools we have in our armory as humans: by learning to write well we think more clearly and more deeply. I am not interested in helping authors churn out a ‘book as a business card’: I challenge authors to hone their concept into distinctive and impactful intellectual property which will add value to their entire business ecosystem. My extensive publishing experience means that I have strong commercial as well as creative instincts, and the authors I coach have been published by many top traditional houses as well as by Practical Inspiration Publishing. I focus exclusively on business and self-development books, and encourage authors to see the book as the hub of a wider ecosystem, such as speaking, consulting, training etc.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
I bring a unique blend of rigorous editorial experience and publishing instincts honed in top publishing houses together with strong business expertise (through my MBA and also as an entrepreneur myself). But perhaps the most critical attribute in my success is that I care so passionately about articulating and communicating ideas that will make life and work better for readers.

What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
In my book coaching program, Fantasy Footsteps: Road to Publication, I directly support fantasy writers as they navigate all stages of writing—from brainstorming/outlining to drafting to revising to making solid decisions about publication. Within nine months, writers go from the bare beginnings of a story to a finished novel ready to share with the world.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
The single most important thing I attribute to my success has been investing in myself as a coach and learning from those who have walked the road before me. This has helped me create a book coaching program with three essential components that transform clients’ writing lives: a roadmap so writers know what to do, the mindset skills with which to do it, and the support, accountability, and personal feedback needed to ensure the work actually gets done!

What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
The most important difference in my book mentoring is listening. It’s vital that every client’s author voice is actually heard, valued, expanded and translated powerfully onto the page for greatest impact for their readers. One of my strengths is working with stories of transformation, and so courage, compassion and nonjudgment play a big role. I help authors not just write an expensive business card but leave a legacy! Beyond credibility, working on a high-quality, bestselling book can change an author’s life—and change the world. Having worked extensively in both traditional publishing and indie-publishing, I can also help launch a book to its greatest capacity, and an author to their greatest capacity as an emerging leader.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
I think the biggest contribution I give is that with the full breadth of services I offer, from nurturing an idea to launching an international bestseller, I can meet an author exactly where they are and have systems and knowledge to be able to launch their book dreams into reality.

Winona L. Thomas
Multi-talented, Winona L. Thomas is a Certified Professional Author Coach, and is seen as one of Metropolitan Detroit’s rare treasures. Known for her many accomplishments including Founder of Kiras Publishing LLC and Authors on the Rise Media platform and Magazine, talk & radio show host & producer, author of 5 inspirational books, writer of inspirational poetry, articles, prayers, reflections, and thematic plays.

Kiras Publishing was birthed out of Winona’s own personal struggle of trying to get her first book published, which almost played out in a courtroom drama. It is because of the challenges Winona faced as a first-time author; she decided that no author should have to be discouraged during the publishing process because of someone else’s lack of integrity. Kiras Publishing was established to come alongside aspiring authors to guide & equip them with the needed resources and tools, so they can transition from having a completed manuscript to becoming a Published Author!
What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
As an Author Coach, it is important that I am visible to my client during their publishing journey. I know first-hand the struggle it can be to start writing the manuscript and staying motivated to finish the manuscript. An Author Coach for me also means becoming my client’s accountability partner to ensure they make it to the publishing finish line. I believe what differentiates me from other Author Coaches is my willingness to stay visible during my client’s publishing process as well as building that relationship and partnership with my clients.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
The most important factor to my success as an Author Coach is me showing up for my business, for my clients. In the beginning phases of starting my business journey, I did not understand the importance of showing up, being present in my business. People will not know you have a business or know about the services you offer if you are not present in your own business. Once I let go of the fear of other people’s opinion, I started to show up, be present for my business; because part of my success is being able to give back.

What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
My coaching style is different because not only do I provide book coaching, but I help aspiring non-fiction authors confront and combat mental and emotional barriers that have been preventing them from confidently sharing their stories. I teach them how to own their truth and profit from their pain. My proven story-telling formula shows authors how to complete a well-polished, quality manuscript within 24 hours. My methods also provide strategies to coach authors on how to use their books to create multiple streams of income.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
The single most thing that has contributed to my success as a coach is the fact that I have several coaches. I believe that every coach needs a coach and my ability to remain teachable and allow others who have accomplished things I aspire to achieve has been a total game-changer for me and my career. I also believe that my ability to properly vet potential clients has led to sustainable success for my business. Understanding that not every client is my client has made me lots of money and saved me lots of time.

What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
I support budding writers who have no prior writing experience to achieve their author dream through a unique hands-on approach that gives specific and actionable feedback, allowing them to write in their voice which results in an easy to read style. My blueprint plan which is adopted at the beginning of the process is one of the major factors for this success.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
Without a doubt, my book, Publish Your Way to More Clients has been a large contributing factor in growing my business. Not only does it show potential clients HOW to write a successful lead generating book, but having been through the process myself I have complete empathy for the process, which includes factors like Imposter Syndrome and the fear of being published. It has brought me in thousands of pounds worth of business, proving the title does what it says.

What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
My coaching draws on both publishing experience and business expertise to help leaders clarify and communicate their ideas more effectively. A supported inquiry process helps you articulate and rigorously test your book concept, and my editorial support enables you develop it into a structured outline and go on to write your book in a way that adds value to your business from Day 1.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
The use of writing as a powerful thinking tool as well as a tool for communication is what underpins my approach with clients: it’s immensely freeing and rewarding, and results in a more powerful experience for readers. My superpower is bringing together this creativity with the strong commercial instincts of a publisher specifically focused on business books.

I work with nonfiction authors who want to build or grow a business around their book and expertise. With more than 3 decades of experience, I lead authors through the entire process of building a strong platform, brand, and significant profit for the long game. My coaching model takes clients through the entire process of shaping a marketable idea, landing an agent, developing a winning proposal that earns a contract with a major publisher, and marketing their book and spin-off products to the right audience.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
My work with multiple agents and major US publishers has provided the expertise to serve my clients. As a result, word-of-mouth from my successful author-clients has traveled. Clients also appreciate the “extras” I provide such as training in public speaking, executive presence, and media. I support students in becoming a #1 bestselling author quickly by using a focused PROVEN system done in a concentrated amount of time, based on data and not guesswork. My coaching takes a holistic approach; we work on passion and mindset, as well as writing and marketing know-how, so they have the tools they need to succeed and can start implementing on day 1. My approach also avoids some common book-coaching tactics that lead to overwhelm and analysis paralysis.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
The single most important thing that has led to my success is my
flagship 3 Day Bestseller Program. It is a book-writing system that I developed after writing my first book and feeling like there had to be a better way. I have been teaching it since 2004 and have taught it to hundreds of students personally and thousands more through my trainings and writing.

What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
I work with clients to give them a voice. It may be about their business, or it may be their personal story. That story can be told in the traditional way via written words, but with some clients we work together initially via a series of interviews. Telling their story transforms people and changes the way they see their world. It can help take them to the next level. Each person and every story is unique. Everyone has something to say.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
Listening. Through listening to the client and asking the right questions I can assist them in bringing their story to life, and sharing it. Being an author myself helps!

My focus is on empathy and understanding. It’s hard to write a book! I’m there for my writers, not just with my writing expertise and experience, but also with a ton of emotional support. I not only help them write the best book they can, but I also remind them they can do it. I’m in their corner, every step of the way.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
I’m successful as a coach because I believe in every single one of my clients. I listen to their writing goals, their needs, their abilities, their strengths, their weaknesses, their confidences and their doubts and then I craft the individual support they need. Just as there are no two books alike, there are no two writers alike. I make sure each writer gets exactly what they need to accomplish their dreams.

What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
My coaching offers a combination of the business aspects, personal development and creativity that make for successfully publishing an outstanding book that resonates for your readers and comes from a place of authenticity. I help aspiring authors understand the publishing industry, certainly, but perhaps most important, I help them access their inner creative source for clarity, confidence and creativity.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
I have a knack for helping people access their inner knowing and creativity so that their writing truly is something that stands out; often that includes coming up with creative ideas to enhance their book–such as the perfect title.
Susan DeFreitas
An American of Indo-Guyanese descent, Susan DeFreitas is the author of the novel Hot Season, which won a Gold IPPY Award, and the editor of Dispatches from Anarres: Tales in Tribute to Ursula K. Le Guin. Her work has been featured in the Writer’s Chronicle, Story, Daily Science Fiction, Portland Monthly, and High Desert Journal, among other journals and anthologies.

An independent editor and book coach, she specializes in helping writers from historically marginalized backgrounds, and those writing socially engaged fiction, break through into publishing. She divides her time between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Portland, Oregon.
What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
I don’t just help my clients write novels. I help them write meaningful novels–novels that will connect with their readers on a deeper level, because they draw from the author’s own most deeply held truths. In terms of craft, that means a tight focus on character arc, emotional stakes, and the real-world issues the story connects with–issues of power and injustice. Stories centered around personal transformation in the face of such issues offer transformative pathways for the reader as well. This is what I call “story medicine,” which is also the title of my signature course.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
The single most important factor in my success as a coach has been my understanding of the neuroscience of fiction, based on the work of story coach Lisa Cron. The way fiction is taught in MFA programs is often muddled and confusing, and it conflicts in many ways with the principles of effective screenwriting–but it’s all STORY. Lisa’s work showed me what both approaches have in common, as well as the baseline principles that undergird emotionally affecting stories, period. This transformed my work as a book coach.
Stuart Wakefield
Stuart Wakefield became a book coach because, although we live in a world of story, it’s easy for writers to steer off track without a little one-on-one guidance from a professional. With so many stories in the world, there’s a risk that the good ones will get lost in the business of selling and buying books, and Stuart has built a solid coaching business based on his mission to give books the best chance of getting into readers’ hands.

What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
I bring 26 years of experience in publishing, theatre, design, and broadcast media to the table, meaning I have a visceral understanding of what makes stories work in a variety of mediums. I coach my writers by bringing those mediums’ perspectives into play, teaching them to look at scenes from an actor’s point of view and from a director’s point of view, because they’re essentially the director and all the actors. That has led my writers to significant breakthroughs when developing stories or fixing the ones that aren’t working. And being a bestselling author myself helps!
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
My empathy is my strength and the key to my success. Intuitively, I can see the world through my writers’ eyes and share their perspective, even if I don’t agree with them. Because of that, I have an instinctive ability to understand them, hear their unvoiced questions, and anticipate their needs. I always seem to find the right words and the right tone, and I help my writers find the right phrases to express their feelings about their craft, helping them give voice to their writing life. For all these reasons, my writers keep coming back.

The single, most important thing is the unique method we created that can turn even a substandard writer into a professional author. When the boo is finished, this method allows the author to repurpose the book material into other revenue-producing products that provides a continuous stream of income and expands the author’s reach.

What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
The single most important thing that’s contributed to Mary’s success as a book coach is she believes the goal of writing books is because we’re called to do it. She helps people write to raise their voices and to have an impact on people to get them to think and maybe act. She also believes that a book coach can help others write the book they’ve always wanted to write. You know. The one that will resonate with your audience, establish yourself as an expert and make you proud as a peacock once it’s finished, published and out in the world.

What do you do differently or how is your coaching different from others?
My passion lies in working with talented, motivated authors who have a great story to share with the world, no matter where they are on their writing journeys. My coaching gives my clients the tools they need to navigate the publishing world, to think about things from a business perspective, but to also stay motivated and connected to their big “why”. My coaching primarily focuses on the three most important areas of an author’s writing life: craft, logistics, and mindset.
What according to you has been the single most important thing that has contributed to your success as a coach?
My understanding and continued fascination with the world of storytelling has been the biggest contribution to my success as a coach. In addition to being a voracious, lifelong reader, prior to publishing, I worked in the entertainment industry, and the rules of and qualities of great storytelling are the same across all media. Whether you’re writing fiction or nonfiction, the strength of a book’s storytelling is integral to its success, artistic and commercial. Readers need to connect with the language of a book, and if it’s not engaging or accessible, the goal of the book won’t matter.

My husband Bill and I live in my native Maryland and have a blended family of five children – three boys and two girls who are mostly out on their own now – and I’m a grandmother! I love to read, travel, swim, take long walks, and most of all to write! I think I was born loving to write…I remember I wrote my first “novel” in a spiral-bound notebook when I was ten-years-old about a girl and her dog.

But my dream of being a novelist was put on hold as “life” and its myriad responsibilities took hold, including careers as a news reporter, advertising agency owner and marketing director to help put food on the table. Fortunately, the dream God placed on my heart resurfaced and He called me to write a modern-day novel based on the Bible’s Book of Job, which became The Faithful One. Looking back I see He had a plan…I was a lot like my Job character: I was losing my marriage, my business, my kids (who were becoming teenagers and, it seemed, no longer needed their mom) and finally, my health through a debilitating disease. Like my Job character, Seth Jacobs, I held onto that last shred of faith and through the grace of God got my health, family and life back in a richer, fuller way. I was healed through my writing – and knew I could help give others hope too.
Julie Artz
Author Julie Artz spent her young life sneaking into wardrobes searching for Narnia. When people thought that was creepy, she went in search of other ways to go on mystical adventures. Now she finds those long-sought doors to magical story worlds in her work as an author, editor, and book coach.

An active member of the writing community, she volunteers for SCBWI and Pitch Wars and is a member of EFA and AWP. Julie lives in an enchanted forest outside of Redmond, Washington, with her husband, two strong-willed teenagers, and a trio of naughty furry familiars.
Simon Golden
“I hired Simon to work on my book, The Financial Mindset Fix. My hope was that Simon could help me find research support for my writing. He delivered wonderful research support but also was extremely instrumental in helping me structure and organize my book and ensure my content was comprehensive and most useful to readers. I’m confident that the manuscript I delivered is twice as good as what I would have submitted without Simon’s help.

My editor from Sounds True said that my manuscript delivery was “an editor’s dream” and needed no developmental editing. On top of all this, Simon is one of the kindest human beings I’ve known and is an absolute delight to work with. Highly intelligent, reliable, responsive, creative and collaborative. I highly recommend any opportunity to work with Simon.”

Lori Yares
Hi, I’m Lori Owner, Editor, & Book Coach. My dream has always been to make a difference in this world and improve lives, even if it’s just by bringing a smile to someone’s face. Whether I spread it through my own writing or guide other writers to spread it through theirs, all that matters is we leave the world better than we found it. I also love happy endings. But if endings can’t be happy, they should at least leave a reader with hope.
