Anyone who is ready to make a commitment towards changing for the better! Any such person will benefit by appointing a transformation coach.

As the end of a decade comes closer, look back at everything that has changed leading up to 2020. Social, political, geographic upheavals have changed the world in many ways. As they say, change is inevitable. And this is where most people struggle. To deal with change is not easy. Transforming one’s self is even more difficult.

Here are some examples of people who choose a transformation coach to work with:

  1. As a leader of a Fortune 500 company, Tom knows he has to give up limiting habits to be more successful. In this case, change is critical for the success of his company and his career. But to bring such changes to his behavior is not an easy task. Tom has to get over several decades of conditioning. He has consulted a life coach earlier. But Tom feels that a transformation coach is the need of the hour now.
  2. Mikhail and Hilda have been struggling in their marriage for years. Leaving was never an option given their traditional mindset and conservative family values. After decades, Hilda decides to move on. She consults a transformation coach to help her come to terms with her altered reality.
  3. Greg is lonely after the sudden demise of his partner. Martha had been his partner for over 40 years. Greg finds it difficult to come to terms with her death. There is nothing to look forward to, he says. Can a transformation coach help him? Yes.

Who are your prospective clients as a transformation coach?

Anybody can be your client as a transformation coach!

Who is a transformation coach?

Who is a transformation coach? How is it different from a life coach? In this section, I will answer these questions.

Change happens at every level: individually, socially and economically. But transformation is deeper than that. Real transformation happens when individuals commit to changing habits. They then let go of beliefs that are no longer serving their life purpose.

A transformation coach is responsible for:

  • Supports a client’s personal development and growth in life and at work
  • Increases a client’s effectiveness in achieving his goals and aspirations

Are these also the goals of a life coach? Yes, they are. What is different though is the approach.

Transformation coaching vs life coaching

Transformation coaching is similar but not identical to life coaching.

Life coaches encourage a change of action among their clients. A transformation coach helps a client dig deeper. He encourages the client to work on changing their self-perception with raised awareness. This often involves challenging self perceptions and belief about their limitations.

A response on Quora highlights the difference quite well.

“A transformative coach doesn’t offer advice, assign strategies or give you things to do. He will point to the misunderstandings that are keeping you from seeing what is going on. When you see what you are up against, you will be able to tap into your own wisdom. So you can come up with your own wisdom, insights, and solutions.

Consider people who’ve had a near-death experience. Their lives and behavior changed in an instant as a result. They may have been afraid, insecure and serial procrastinators. Suddenly they start taking on big challenges and show up to life in a whole new way.

Their lives DID NOT change because they found better strategies and methods. Nor did they find an endless supply of will power and motivation.

Their behavior changed because their perspective of life and problems changed. They saw life in a different light and that made all the difference.

The job of a transformative coach is to help you change your perspective. This helps a client see what is going on. Once the client experiences this, he/she will know what to do. And he/she will have the natural motivation and resilience to do it. No strategies, methods or superhuman displays of will power necessary. Who you are is enough.”

Look up my earlier blog on How To Become A Life Coach: All About The Life Coaching Business. There, I have answered the question about what life coaches do. The basic difference between a life and transformation coach is the process and result.

Transformation Coach: What is your niche?

First of all, let me say this again. Finding a niche is crucial towards streamlining your coaching practice. I have learnt this lesson the hard way and lost $100,000 years ago! Since then, I have managed to fix the positioning of our coaching practice. I have now turned it into a 6-figure earning venture.

Like life coaching, transformation coaching has several niches. A transformation coach can operate in any of the niches that are available for life coaching. I have mentioned life coaching niches in my earlier blogs here and here:

Like I said, it is the process of coaching that differentiates a life coach from a transformation coach.

What are some of the niches within transformation coaching that you can look at?

Life and mindset transformation coach

Change is not real unless it is permanent. This is where the transformation coach lends value. A transformation coach opens the floodgate for a lasting change in a client’s life. He does this by challenging a client to identify what is holding him/her back.

Measuring the success of a coach is difficult. But understanding the impact of a transformation coach is easy. If transformation happens, the client shares an altered vision of the future. Hence it is important to track his journey. Agree on measures of success before the engagement begins.

Business transformation coach

A transformation coach works on issues that are holding a client back. The client may have to learn new skills, or develop problem-solving abilities. Transformation coaching will bring about more effectiveness in the workplace. There will be a noticeable improvement of business metrics. There will also be a possible impact on financials. Is team productivity the measure of success for your client? If so, speak to the team that your client supervises before and after your engagement. Any specific feedback they provide about changed behavior offers valuable information. And it cements your success as a transformation coach! Speaking of transformative thinking, this article is a good read for entrepreneurs.

Body transformation coach

Most readers associate this with health and wellness transformation. This could also be the journey of someone who is coming to terms with sexual preference for the same gender. Or someone exploring his/her own gender identity. Society inflicts a lot of pain on out-of-the-norm individuals. So they have to work towards building confidence and a positive mindset.

These are some examples of how a transformation coach can choose the same niches as a life coach. But he/she will deliver a more lasting result.

How will you determine your niche?

I have earlier written a blog on how you can determine your niche. Once you find what works for you, create a marketing plan that targets your identified niche.

What results does a transformation coach bring about?

A transformation coach works on changing habits and beliefs. This is a task that requires a lot from the client. The process of transformation takes time but the results are great!

Here is what a transformation coach can help a client achieve:

Nothing runs too deep to be beyond change. It could be fatigue, limiting habits or trying circumstances. Clients usually go through a three-step process of mindset shift. You can prepare your clients for this. Also agree on what success means to him/her:

  1. Understanding and accepting limiting habits/thoughts. This is the first step that your client will take as part of the transformation. This requires honest self-appraisal and awareness and may need deep introspection and effort! As a coach you must realize that this is the hardest task that a client performs. Be empathetic. But remember that this process is necessary. Only then can positive change happen and become permanent.
  2. Questioning values and revising belief systems. The client will eventually reach a phase during the coaching journey where he/she will be able to recognize limiting beliefs. The long-lasting impact of a transformation coach is to empower clients for the future. The client should be able to identify beliefs that do not serve them well. They should be willing to replace them with new beliefs that will inspire a more positive, healthier future.
  3. Commit to behavioral and lifestyle changes. A client must commit to change. That is the first step in taking actions to break the cycle of toxic habits and limiting thoughts. Once that is established, a transformation coach will be able to pave the way to achieve success.

How do you assess success of a transformation coach?

Most claim that the results of transformation coaching are difficult to measure. I disagree with this thinking.

Change happens at every level but in the most profound, deepest sense it lasts long when there is transformation. If the client has undergone such transformation, then the results are easy to notice.

How can you measure the success of a transformation coach? Well, that depends on the goals that a transformation coach and client agree on prior to beginning their coaching. Is your client looking to impact the bottom line in his/her business? Is he looking for a fulfilling relationship? Figure this out and consistently work towards it during the coaching process!

In the business sector, the results are easy to measure. If your client wants to impact business results, identify one or two key performance indicators with your client. If your client wants a behavioral or cultural change in the workplace, use different measurement techniques. These can be one-on-one interviews or questionnaires with stakeholders about changes.

There is a case study of how T-Mobile sought to measure the success of their Coach to Inspire program in 2011. You may want to read the case study here. The study talks about practical methods to evaluate coaching.

As far as personal development is concerned the measures of assessment can seem vague. But the results are definite. While starting out, chart out your client’s goals by asking questions like:

  1. What does success look like for you?
  2. As your transformation coach, what would you like us to work on changing in your life?
  3. How will you measure your improvement as a part of this coaching process?
  4. How many aspects of your life do you think will benefit from a transformation? Which one shall we start with? How long do you think it will take to work on each aspect?

Once you have documented these, go back and relook at the client’s achievements from time to time.

Top skills to be a successful transformation coach

The internet is rife with the top skills that make for a successful coach. But the truth is this. There is no magic formula that I can give you to guarantee success. I can merely empower you with the knowledge I have gained over the years.

Good coaches have some traits that help them in their coaching journey.

The first quality is easy to understand. Can you guess what it is?

Yes, you guessed it right!

  1. A transformation coach has to be an EFFECTIVE LISTENER. The only way you will be able to help the client is by asking powerful questions. While I have provided a list of some questions here and here, you will have to modify them in each case.
  2. Be empathetic, supportive and reliable. Your clients have a hard task ahead of them. They will need your empathy and support right from the beginning. But they will also need to be able to trust you before they can open up. Respect the confidentiality that your clients entrust you with. Modifying the thought process of your clients will take time. Remember that it is their journey and your role is to empower them. Do not make it personal if your clients struggle or fail a few times.
  3. You are not the problem solver. You are merely going to guide the client through his journey. As such, you may sometimes find it difficult but you have to remain objective. The solution to the problems lie within the client. You are merely going to help unravel it.
  4. Develop plans as per your clients’ capabilities. Almost every client walks in through the door thinking that most of his problems will be solved as a part of the coaching process. It will not be so. It is good to set goals and work towards those but also allow for failures and delays. Do not take the responsibility for those.
  5. Keep learning. Meeting the client face to face is merely one aspect of the coaching process. As a transformation coach you will have to look after several things. These include positioning and marketing your brand, understanding social media and networking.

You will find more such skills mentioned in my earlier blog on life coaching.

Do you need certification to be a transformation coach?

The good news is that you do not need a degree to be a transformation coach. This is because the market is still unregulated.

However, as I always say, you must invest in yourself before asking others to invest in you.

Given the immense scope for growth, beginning your career as a transformation coach with some training is recommended. But experience and certification are not the same thing! Read the blog for a better understanding of what I mean.
