Is there a need for a website? Or is it a marketing exercise that you feel is unnecessary?

Research shows that customers trust brands that have a website.

People are more likely to buy services from a business with a trustworthy reputation.

Look at this article. Survey Monkey has done a research which shows:

  • Two-thirds of adults in the United States (US) say that trust in a brand has a great deal (31%) or a lot (37%) of influence on their decision. Especially when they are buying something expensive.
  • Adults in the US are not alone in the importance they place on trust.
  • 57% adults in the United Kingdom said trust in a brand impacts their decision-making.
  • 69% adults in Canada said trust in a brand influences their decision-making.

There are several advantages of taking your business online besides financial reasons.

How much do life coaches earn?

There were 17,500 life coach practitioners in North America in 2016. This figure was from a report by International Coach Federation (ICF) report. The average salary of a life coach was about $61,900.

This website cites research by Ziprecruiter. It says 63% of life coaches make between $11,000 and $40,499 per year. Yet, the national average salary is $72,919 a year. The upper range of salary is $335,500.

According to them, this wide range suggests a few things.

  • First, some people coach as a side or part-time job. So they are not making a full-time salary. 63% of life coaches make between $11,000 and $40,499 per year.
  • There’s a lot of volatility around the country for life coach salaries. This may be due to supply and demand. Or it may depend on the cities that have the best training programs available. As a result, they have the best life coaches.
  • Life coaches charge different fees depending on their experience. But the average cost for a one-hour session with a life coach is $231.
  • The average salary for this profession ranges worldwide. The highest average salary is in Oceania ($73,100). The lowest salary was in Eastern Europe ($18,400).
  • The average salary for a life coach in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia is in the $30,000 range. For Western Europe, it is $55,300.

A SurveyMonkey study states that consumers are not too bothered by a brand lacking social media accounts. But a missing website is a bit more disturbing.

In the US, only 18% of respondents said they have a great deal (7%) or a lot (11%) of trust in a company that does not have a website. This included one in 10 respondents (aged 18-34). You can read more about the findings here.

You must have heard these age-old sayings.

But today, online impression is the first impression that your client has about you. Make it count!

What does your life coaching website say about you?

Look at it this way. Earlier, you entered an office or met the client at your office. You dressed well for the occasion and put your best foot forward. You shook hands with your client and made eye contact. You spoke about your achievements and answered all questions. If you did not have an answer you promised to follow up and get back. And you did.

And this impressed the prospective client! The business was yours.

That scenario is fast becoming obsolete. Today your client may not even meet you even once during the whole course of your engagement. How then are you going to make your first impression?

Your website says a lot about you. Your website is the first repository of information about who you are. It shows the list of clients you have worked with. And it showcases your brand’s business model and the principles you practise. It is the first hand shake, so to speak. So you need to make it warm.

Clients seek answers to the following questions when they look at your life coaching website:

  • What can you do for me?
  • Who are you?
  • Since when have you been in business?
  • How can I reach you?

How to build a life coaching website?

Before you build a website, you need to understand one thing.

Building and nurturing an online presence will take some time and effort. And the same amount of preparation that it takes to build a brand for the first time. Hence, you will have to put in the same amount of thought into the following activities:

  1. Developing a clear brand mission, vision and long-term and short term goals
  2. Preparing a business model based on research and market survey
  3. Drawing up a profile of your target audience
  4. Marketing your brand

You may wonder why I said you need to learn these skills. After all, you could very well outsource the design and content of your website. Several agencies will also help you with SEO. But you need to be aware of the rules of the game to know how your agency is representing your brand.

Basic components of a life coaching website

There are some basic components of all websites. How you arrange them speaks volumes about your brand. It also has a direct impact on profits.

Every website has a landing page or Home page. This introduces the business to a prospective buyer.

This is a good place to differentiate your offering. Use the market research you must have done to sell your services to the client. Focus on the client and not yourself in this section. Aim to answer the question “What’s in it for me?”. Why should the client choose to partner with you?

The next section is About Us. This is where you can talk about yourself. I would recommend you talk first about the business and how it grew. Clients want to hear the brand story and identify with its successes. You may include the business’ Vision and Mission statements in this section. You may also lead to another sub-section to introduce the people who are integral to the business. If you are running a solo show, you may add a link to a page with your bio.

The Services page will give you the opportunity to talk about your offerings. Draft out your key strengths and achievements. Mention the names of top clients and post their recommendations. You will need to source these from your clients. This is where you are speaking to your target audience one-to-one. Hence it is important for you to focus on your niche and give the content a punch!

FAQs refer to the Frequently Asked Questions about your brand. This is another platform for you to sell your key messages. Some common questions are:

  • How much do you charge?
  • What can you help with?
  • On what criteria do you accept clients?
  • Would you be willing to meet in person and travel onsite for a client, if required?

In either case, they should have many ways to contact you: Email/phone/social media platforms. You may design a text box segment on the page. This helps them type in a message for you on the page itself. Or you can create a direct link to your email/social media platforms.

Website template

There are several life coach website templates that you can look at or download online. While several are free, I recommend that you do not let price be the main factor. Choose something that is easy to navigate and has a clean design. Here is one that shows you the topics that you may want to include. You may customize images, topics and content as per your requirements. Hence the template comes with dummy text.

Dos and don’ts of a life coaching website

Here are certain guidelines that will help you plan and design your webpage.


  1. Design an easy to navigate website. It should tell the client what your brand stands for straight away. An ill-designed website with spelling or formatting errors sends a subconscious message. It tells the client that you are careless and sloppy.
  2. Have you walked down the street and walked into a shop? You wanted to check out an item that you do not need. You wanted to see it as it looks attractive. Is it the shop foyer that attracted you? Or the display pattern of the items? Your website is like that brick and mortar shop. What you display on your life coaching website should attract the right clientele. And once you draw them inside, the content (item) should encourage a customer to buy.
  3. Invest in a designer. It is tempting to cut costs especially when you are starting out. If you do not have professional coding and designing experience, hire experts who do. There are several options for creating a website on WordPress for under $3,000. Prices begin at $100 but setting up a clean and easy-to-use life coaching website is important. So invest some money in the design and content.
  4. Answer the question that every client will want to know. The most important question for every client is “What is in it for me?” Mention the benefits of hiring you within the first paragraph or two on your website. Otherwise a prospective client will lose interest.
  5. Provide a call to action. Once someone lands on your landing page, what do you want them to do? The aim is to have them hire you. But your life coaching website may also have other indirect objectives. For example, do you want them to subscribe to the website or newsletter? Your intention should be clear. This helps direct prospective clients towards fulfilling that goal.
  6. Understand basic SEO good practice. If you want your website to come up on Google searches, then there are certain things to master. While it seems daunting at first, it is a lesson that you will want to pick up. Even if you plan to outsource SEO services, you need to know what to ask a company that you hire! For example, Google has made it clear that if you want to rank high, then your site needs to be on HTTPS and not HTTP. This is due to security reasons.
  7. Tell your brand story. Every brand has a story. Let your website tell your story. The connect that a prospective client feels on your website is emotional. This means that you have to keep in mind your target audience. Shape the content and design the page based on what you think they are looking for. Own your story. Put up a picture of you and reveal your achievements. Some relevant qualities that are worth bragging about as a life coach are:
  • Names of your top clients (and their recommendations)
  • Your ability to offer stress management relief
  • Your specialization in counselling during life changes – whether during job layoffs or retirements
  • Your tips for time management
  1. What does the internet know about you? Everything. Make sure that your internet history is clean. Recommendations or positive reviews should be visible. Rarely does a client pick you up without doing some research into you and your brand’s reputation in the market. Clients who are happy with your services will definitely support your business. Word of mouth is the most effective type of marketing, and it is free.
  2. Find your niche and cater to that target audience. In a previous blog, I have spoken about how my business grew after I figured out my target audience. This was after losing out thousands of dollars trying to be a crowd-pleaser. The truth is you are better off creating a specialized service. And selling it to a specific target audience. This holds true for any website.
  3. Design buttons for quick actions. There are two buttons that a client in a hurry will appreciate. Many websites do not offer these. These are a Search button and a clear Contact section. There should be an easy way to contact you. And it should be easy to find, either at the top right corner or through a chat window. Some people leave it only at the end of the webpage. But I find it tedious to scroll down to the end if I have to leave a quick message.
  4. Your website is dynamic. So allow your learning curve to be reflected on your website on a regular basis. Change is a must as you also need to keep up with changing technology trends. For example, now the viewership is over mobile phones. So your website must have a mobile-friendly page. Keep coaching. Keep learning. And keep updating (your website).

Some good life coaching websites to follow

While planning your own, you should look at several life coaching websites. This website provides a ready list of several life coaches with great websites. The author points out why each website stands out. Browse through the links and study each in some detail.

Choose the one that inspires you. Study it in great detail and write down the things that you like about the website. Once you do this a few times, you will find out which aspects of a website matter to you. Your design can be based on those principles.

My journey to success

And now let me tell you about my journey as a way to show that achieving success is an ongoing process. We may not build a successful business right at the start. That is the time to introspect and resurrect our business if need be.

In a previous post, I have highlighted why it is important to find a niche. Working to please everyone and target a large crowd as my clientele, I lost $100,000, and this was years ago! Then, I realized that I had something to offer that no one else at that time could think of. I could target a very niche crowd and sell them my services.
